# What Are Watts?

**Watts (W)** measure electrical power — how fast energy is consumed or converted into heat, light, or motion. A 1,500W space heater uses 1,500 joules of energy every second while running.

## Watt’s Law

 **P (watts) = I (amps) × V (volts)**

Rearrange to find amps: **A = W ÷ V**. See [Watt’s Law explained](/watts-law-explained/) for worked examples.

## Watts vs Watt-Hours (kWh)

Watts are instantaneous power. Watt-hours measure energy over time: **Wh = W × hours**. Your utility bill charges kilowatt-hours (kWh), not watts.

## Typical Wattage Examples

| Device | Approx. Watts |
| --- | --- |
| LED bulb | 9–15 W |
| Laptop charger | 45–100 W |
| Microwave | 1,000–1,200 W |
| Electric dryer | 4,000–5,600 W |
