# What Are Amps?

**Amps (amperes)** measure electric current — the rate at which electric charge flows through a conductor. One amp equals one coulomb of charge per second. Higher amperage means more current, which usually requires heavier wire and higher-rated breakers.

## Amps in Plain English

Think of voltage as electrical pressure and amps as flow rate. A 15A circuit breaker limits current to 15 amps. A hair dryer drawing 12A on a 120V outlet uses about 1,440 watts (12 × 120).

## How Amps Relate to Watts

**Watts = Amps × Volts** (DC and resistive AC)

For AC motors and compressors, include power factor: **W = A × V × PF**. Use our [amps to watts calculator](/) for instant results.

## Common Amp Ratings

| Circuit | Typical Amps | Use |
| --- | --- | --- |
| USB charger | 1–2 A | Phone and tablet charging |
| 15A breaker | Up to 15 A | US standard branch circuit |
| EV Level 2 | 32–48 A | 240V home charging |
| 100A service | Up to 100 A | Main panel capacity |
