# Understanding Power Factor

**Power factor (PF)** compares real power (watts) to apparent power (volt-amperes) in AC circuits. PF ranges from 0 to 1.0. Resistive loads like heaters have PF ≈ 1.0; motors often run 0.70–0.95.

 

## Power Factor Formula

 **PF = Real Watts ÷ Apparent VA** **Real Watts = Amps × Volts × PF** 

## Typical Power Factor Values

 

| Load Type | Typical PF |
| --- | --- |
| Resistive heater | 1.00 |
| Fluorescent lighting | 0.85–0.95 |
| Induction motor | 0.70–0.90 |
| Welding equipment | 0.60–0.85 |
